Jordan

What do you think about when you are behind that camera?  If you are like me you are thinking only about how to make your subject look great and different angles and how to get the sunflare etc.  Right? I’m sure your not thinking about what a crappy day you had or the bills or even that your husband told you he’s been wearing the same underwear for a few days because you’ve been so busy you haven’t had time to do laundry! hahah

When I am shooting, I am ALL in.  I am all about that person and wanting them to feel beautiful and great b/c you know most people are so scared to be in front of the camera!

I honestly, wasn’t all to happy about shooting a senior on a Saturday night.  I normally don’t schedule things for Saturday evenings or Sundays.  That’s family time.  We get very little time with my husband at home and the last thing I want to be doing is working.  But, alas, I had this super cool girl who just couldn’t come any other time.

So, I was honestly kind of crabby about doing the session.  But, once I got to meet her a little bit and see what she was like I was sitting there thinking… Ok, enough of this bad attitude. Go out and have fun.  And that’s what I did.

Sometimes, I feel like I put myself in a box and then I go and look at all the other talented photographers out there and think…woah I suck.  (I’m sure I’m not the only one who does that) so really I was getting down on myself because of that.  I got into the rut of comparing myself again to other photographers, other talents, other visions.  I told myself to put those thoughts away and to look at this session differently.  So I did. I didn’t think about the other photographers I thought about how do I make this session so much fun for me and my customer.

So the crabbiness went away and the creativeness and enjoyment came.  I had so much fun on the shoot, I didn’t want to quit.  lol

Here are a couple shots from my session the other night.  I guess the whole moral of the story is, don’t compare yourself to other photographers.  It will only depress you and get you down.  Enjoy what YOU do and always ask yourself what can I do differently this time. How can I make my session more enjoyable for me.  Every single photographer out there has a different vision. We all see through the camera differently. Even when it comes to processing.  Find out who you are and what you love and then do it!

This is a natural light shot.

Don’t know how you could ever think you weren’t a good photographer! You’re amazing! (Though I did feel better to read that… I’ve been going through the same thing this week ;) We definitely shouldn’t compare ourselves! Thanks for your post! You’re awesome!

Sometimes I have had to ban myself from blog surfing for that very reason. Is it a prerequisite that to be a photographer, you have to be a bit insecure too? Anyway, thanks for expressing your feelings - glad I’m not the only one!

ahh yes, that’s me too, comparing and being insecure. Thanks for sharing also, good to know I’m normal =) Just know you do AMAZING work!!!

A true master, these are great! You were able to set your feelings aside and really “rock that OCF!” into submission. :-) I blogged about insecurity a bit recently, and a friend did, too. Guess it goes around!

Have fun, and keep up the amazing work!

Thank you so much for the honest post! Ur right, in that you are not the only one… but with your caliber of photography, you are one of those photographers up there that have the rest of us wondering what we are doing!! LOL! You are incredible and i so wish for the day that i can take a one of your workshops! :)

Thank you Ali it’s nice to know I’m not the only one that thinks like that! I put your moral of the story up on my board so when I get down on myself I can snap out of it!
